Like the smell of concords in the air, the fall season brings Friday night lights to Ted Miller stadium and Picker football. The Pickers are looking to make their mark with second year head coach Shawn Humes in a new division with new rivals. North East has bumped up to the AAA classification for the start of the new enrollment cycle which means there are now new region foes and a very different schedule. The Pickers started their season with a home opener loss to Franklin in a game that had much more than a 34-21 ending. North East led the game late in the first half by a score of 13-o with a passing connection to Brock Conn from quarterback Keyen Skrekla and a five yard run by senior Alex Furmanek. Turnovers, however, let to a turnaround by Franklin who took the lead 14-13 at the half. Franklin returned for the second half with two long pass plays and a pick 6 to finish their scoring. The Pickers managed a late score when Furmanek willed his way to the endzone on a 60 plus yard run. North East heads to Titusville on Friday, August 31st to take on the Rockets. The Pickers are coached by Shawn Humes, Mike Whitney, Matt Stark, Tom Pyle, Steve Righi, Justyn Roda, Kyle Regan with volunteer coaches Tyler Johnson and Wilson Brown. Good luck Pickers!
