The North East track and field teams had an impressive showing at the District 10 Championships this past weekend at Slippery Rock University. The Pickers posted podium worthy performances in fifteen disciplines and had state qualifying efforts in four events. Leading the way for the North East contingent was the boys 4 x 800 meter relay with their gold medal effort time of 8:06 which bested the favored foursome from Grove City High School. Zane Courtwright, Brock Pennington, Jason Seevers and anchor, Josh Lewis took the lead early and never looked back. Joining the 4 x 800 team with a trip to the PIAA Championships was a tandem of sprinters who both posted personal bests en route to podium finishes. Senior Lucas Russell shifted into high gear as he posted a scorching 50.60 and placed 2nd in the 400 meter run while teammate Nick Kerner pushed an amazing start in the 100 meter dash to finish in 5th place with a state qualifying time of 11:25. Adding to the list of qualifiers for the Pickers was freshman shot put sensation, Mercede Myers. Myers posted a distance of 35-6 which was good enough for a silver medal and a trip to Shippensburg.
