The boys cross country team made the most of difficult conditions at the District Ten Championships this past Saturday. Treacherous would be word to describe the course after days of rain, intermittent downpours and being the last division to run. The Pickers came from behind to best General McLane by tiebreaker in the toughest division at the D10 meet. North East moved up to the AA race this year due to enrollment numbers and added to an already stacked field. Senior standout and undefeated Josh Lewis stumbled and fell during the race and ended up placing third behind Jonah Powell of Grove City and Aiden Pearson of Harbor Creek. The real race came when Hayden Fox caught and passed a General McLane runner in the last 100 meters which turned out to be the winning move as Fox became the criteria for the tiebreaker with the Lancers. The move sent the Pickers into the number two spot and punched their ticket to Hershey. While the boys team made their mark, it was freshman Maddie Hartner that wowed the Picker faithful with her 8th place finish and a berth to Hershey. Hartner, who has made steady gains all year, joined an elite list of North East girls to qualify for the state championships as a freshman. Congratulations and good luck at Hershey!

The golf team set a goal early in the season to wear gold at the end of the season. A lofty goal, but one they felt could be achieved when looking at their trip to the PIAA Championships the previous year. They did just that on Wednesday, October 24th. The boys golf team, that included freshman star and the girls AA silver medalist from the day before, along with all but one underclassmen, finished atop the podium. The team of Swan, her older brother Isaiah, District 10 champion and state medalist Carter Hassenplug, Western Region champion Alec Hite and freshman Ryan Hathaway, outdistanced their closest opponent by 17 strokes. Not a bad day for the only public school in the AA contest. Lydia, nursing a sore shoulder, posted a team best 3 over par 74. Senior leader Hite, posted a solid 78 while Isaiah Swan and Hassenplug closed the door on their competition with a pair of 81’s. Even more amazing is the fact that Isaiah was wearing a brace after suffering a significant knee injury on Friday of the previous week. An injury that left him unsure if he would even compete and prompted the addition of Taylor Urban to the squad as an alternate. Hathaway was also impressive in his first state competition with a 95. The team was greeted back at home with three firetrucks and an enthusiastic crowd at the school. Congratulations on an impressive season and a lifetime achievement! The Pickers are coached by co-head coaches Jon Sedelmyer and Troy Hassenplug and assisted by Adrienne Hassenplug, Dave Mazza and Mark Hughes.

The PIAA individual and team golf championships start on Monday, October 22nd. Monday and Tuesday will showcase the AA and AAA girls and boys individual tournament in York, PA. North East will be represented in the boys tournament by Western Region champion and PIAA medalist Alec Hite along with D10 Champion Carter Hassenplug. Freshman phenom, Lydia Swan, will look to add to her D10 and Western Region titles with state hardware. On Wednesday, the team tournament takes place and the Pickers are primed for a state medal. Sophomore Isaiah Swan and Freshman Ryan Hathaway will join the trio to compete for gold in the boys PIAA AA team event. Best of luck to this talented group.

There are a couple schedule changes due to the poor weather conditions. The home girls soccer game vs. Titusville scheduled for today, October 2nd has been moved to Friday, October 5th and will remain a home game. Additionally, the cross country meet scheduled at Youngsville today, has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday October 3rd. Stay tuned for additional updates.
