Athletic physicals are June 1st at Vineyard Primary Care at 2060 N Pearl St, North East, PA. These physicals are covered by the district and are required of any student that wishes to participate in a middle or high school PIAA sport. The PIAA requires these physicals to be completed no earlier than June 1st each year and they must be submitted as part of the official CIPPE packet. These forms should be filled out prior to the day of the physical to expedite the process. This is the only opportunity for a district sponsored physical and will cover any sport in the fall, winter and spring seasons. Parents may obtain the packets at both the high school and middle school offices or download it from this site. Below is a list of times for each sport and the physical form link for download. If you are unable to make the assigned times, you may arrive with the spring sports at 11:15 am or contact Athletic Director Pat Fordyce at 814 881-7173.

The North East track and field teams had an impressive showing at the District 10 Championships this past weekend at Slippery Rock University. The Pickers posted podium worthy performances in fifteen disciplines and had state qualifying efforts in four events. Leading the way for the North East contingent was the boys 4 x 800 meter relay with their gold medal effort time of 8:06 which bested the favored foursome from Grove City High School. Zane Courtwright, Brock Pennington, Jason Seevers and anchor, Josh Lewis took the lead early and never looked back. Joining the 4 x 800 team with a trip to the PIAA Championships was a tandem of sprinters who both posted personal bests en route to podium finishes. Senior Lucas Russell shifted into high gear as he posted a scorching 50.60 and placed 2nd in the 400 meter run while teammate Nick Kerner pushed an amazing start in the 100 meter dash to finish in 5th place with a state qualifying time of 11:25. Adding to the list of qualifiers for the Pickers was freshman shot put sensation, Mercede Myers. Myers posted a distance of 35-6 which was good enough for a silver medal and a trip to Shippensburg. The other track and field members to make it to the medal stand were:

High Jump – Gracie Victory 7th
Discus – Sarah Wakley 5th
400 meter dash – Justin Warr 4th
800 meter run -Josh Lewis 3rd, Jason Seevers 8th
3200 meter run – Brock Pennington 5th, Zane Courtwright 7th
4 x 100 meter relay – 6th Warr, Russell, Kerner, Jelley
Pole Vault – Devin Muscarella 8th
4 x 400 meter relay – 3rd – Warr, Russell, Makin, Kerner

Coach Bob North will be taking over as head volleyball coach for the Lady Pickers this fall. North, a volunteer for the girls team the past few years, will replace long time coach Sherry Elchynski who has retired from teaching and stepped down after thirty plus years of coaching. North brings a wealth of coaching experience himself, having coached multiple sports for over 30 years. North’s credentials include 15 years of coaching girls volleyball along with coaching boys volleyball at Westfield for ten years after creating that program. In that time, he led his teams to seven sectional titles. Coach North is married to Amy North who teaches at North East Middle School and has three sons Tyler, Trey and Trevor.

Another year of North East athletics is coming to a close and it is a nice time to recognize the senior athletes that have dedicated so much time to their sports. Recently, the softball and baseball teams held their senior night celebrations during their last home games. The girls softball team honored their two senior players when they played host to Mercyhurst Prep at Mercyhurst North East Dewey Field. Alexis Orton and Rachel Sanfilippo were recognized and accompanied by their parents and ended their Picker seasons with a home victory over the Lakers by an 11-1 margin. The baseball team hosted Northwestern for their senior night festivities. The senior baseball players that were recognized were Brock Conn, Kazuo Inami, Colin Watts and Austin Young. The baseball seniors closed out their home stand with an exciting come from behind win in the bottom of the 7th inning. Congratulations and good luck to all seniors and thank you for your dedication!

The GoErie.com list of “Athlete of the Week” selections contain a host of North East athletes. Colin Watts represents the baseball team with 2 RBI’s and a 3 for 3 hitting streak in a 6-4 extra innings win over region foe Conneaut. Lexi Orton is a standout softball selection for here 2 for 2 effort with 2 runs scored and an RBI in a 8-3 win over Conneaut. The track and field teams are represented by speedster Lucas Russell who garnered three gold medals at the North East Invitational this past weekend with top finishes in the 100 meter, 400 meter and the 4 x 100 meter relay. On the girls side, Mercede Myers had a personal best of 36′ 2″ in the shot put to take gold at the invitational. Congratulations to all nominees and voting ends at midnight on Tuesday. There have been a host of changes in the spring schedules due to cancellations. The softball game vs. Oil City has been moved to Friday, May 3rd. It will remain at Oil City with a start time of 4:00 pm. The away game vs. Titusville will be played on Monday, May 6th with a 4:00 pm start time.
